Retors d’Alsace – No. 8 – Color 796 – 20 g – 100% Cotton – New Old Stock – by DMC
DMC Retors d’Alsace is a bright, two-ply embroidery thread, perfectly twisted, soft and extremely strong. Made from long-staple cotton and double mercerized, it provides excellent quality, sheen and smooth stitching performance. It does not kink or knot during stitching and glides easily through the fabric.
Size 8 Retors d’Alsace is suitable for embroidery work that requires texture, stitch definition and a naturally raised effect, and is well suited for both classic and decorative designs, including tone-on-tone work.
DMC Retors d’Alsace is recommended for techniques that require body, brightness and stitch clarity. It is ideal for Hardanger embroidery, drawn thread work and traditional whitework, as well as for surface embroidery stitches such as stem stitch and chain stitch. It can also be used for small decorative crochet projects where a firm, slightly raised result is desired.
This skein comes from warehouse stock and is new, never used (New Old Stock – NWO).

Needle Recommendations:
For stitching with DMC Retors d’Alsace size 8 it is recommended to use embroidery (crewel) needles in sizes 7 to 9, which have a sharp point and a sufficiently long eye to accommodate the two-ply twisted thread without abrasion. Milliner (straw) needles in similar sizes are also very suitable, especially for surface embroidery stitches such as stem stitch and chain stitch, because their uniform shaft helps the thread pass smoothly through the fabric without enlarging the hole. When working on tightly woven fabrics or counted techniques such as Hardanger and drawn thread work, a sharp needle around size 8 offers better control and cleaner penetration.
Tips:
For best stitching results, it is advisable to work with moderate thread lengths, generally not longer than about 45–50 cm (18–20 inches), in order to reduce friction, tangling and surface wear. Letting the thread hang freely from time to time helps it untwist naturally during stitching. Retors d’Alsace is double mercerized and very smooth, and typically glides through the fabric with minimal knotting when tension is kept even and not excessive.
